Welcome to Dataninja.

This website is dedicated to providing information on software and techniques for data analysis and research.

How to browse Dataninja
Although this site is hosted on WordPress.com, it’s really not intended as a blog per se. Most of my visitors appear to be directed from search engines, but if you want to browse this site:

  • The pages in the top navigation pane represent collections of the most fundamental articles on the site (tutorials, reference cards, tools, etc.). If this is your first time here, they are a good place to start
  • For the full range of posts on a particular topic, click that topic’s tag (in the sidebar) for a chronological list of all relevant articles
  • As always, try searching the site for more specific information

The philosophy behind Dataninja
The internet has become a global information resource. As a researcher, I have benefited greatly from the many tutorials, data sources, lecture notes, software downloads and other tools available — at no cost — online. I maintain this website in order to give something back to the community that has helped me in so many ways.

Part of the philosophy behind Dataninja is the recognition that many of the web’s resources are distributed freely — both free of charge and with the freedom to modify and redistribute them. I find great value in this arrangement, and try to perpetuate it in two ways:

  1. The information contained on this site is distributed under a Creative Commons license, meaning that it can be distributed (with attribution) and that it can be modified, as long as the product is also shared.
  2. Although I post information regarding the use of commercial applications such as Stata and Microsoft Office, commensurate attention is paid to open-source applications such as R, LaTeX and OpenOffice. Showing people how to use software is of little use if that software is so prohibitively expensive that they can’t try it for themselves.
